Jiri was born in Dobrany, Czech Republic, in 1945.  He spent his childhood in rural surroundings and at the age of 15 he moved with his parents to Prague, where he lived and studied for the next eight formative years.
Among the early, lasting, influences were the 14th century Czech Gothic panel paintings he saw at the National Gallery there.  Jiri's first one-man exhibition was held in Malostranska Beseda, Prague, in 1966. Following the Soviet invasion in 1968, Jiri came to England.  Soon he found employment as a draughtsman with Wedgwood and settled in the Potteries. He married Patricia  in 1972, and became a British citizen in 1975.  He enrolled to study painting at Staffordshire University and graduated in 1979.
Since then he has painted full time. His preferred medium is acrylic.  He mixes his paint only in the best quality china cups found in quantity (minus their handles!) at local scrap-heaps. In his spare time Jiri enjoys gardening and cooking.  He is passionately interested in music and frequently finds his inspiration in music-related themes.
Jiri has exhibited widely.  Over twelve hundred of his works (including drawings and watercolours) are in numerous collections in Britain, and abroad.
